Weekend in the life of a teenager with diabetes

Posted by Johnny

Hello this is my story.

My weekend starts off on Friday night at 6.00pm just about to eat dinner, so I check my sugars 5.9mmol. Do my normal insulin then eat like a pig, because I find that when I drink alcohol my sugars usually drop low, so I try to have a big dinner, full of carbs to hopefully prevent them from dropping and of course I am a responsible drinker.

Jump into the shower have a shave then head to a mates house. Footy starts about 8.30 so we play a bit of cards beforehand. After the footy finishes usually around 11 pm and I have had about 2-3 beers. Eeveryone gets ready to cruise.

We all head out to the local pub to meet up with old friends and meet some new friends as the night goes on. I usually TRY to dance for a couple hours then head off home about 4.00am.

Wake up Saturday for work at 6.30 check my sugars which read 7.0mmol, do my insulin, have breakfast then run off to work. Finish work about midday on Saturday, (I do a bit of labour work on Saturday mornings) go home grab some lunch, jump in the shower and then go to sleep for a couple of hours.

Then wake up about 3.00pm by a mate telling me his plans for the night ahead. Go for a run for about 30 mins then head home have a shower and then check my sugars which are 4.9mmol, do my insulin, then have a big meal.

Have a few mates over my place as everyone gets organised and ready to cruise into town. Before I get into town I have already had 2-3 drinks. 10.30pm hit town with the boys and have 2 drinks to get my confidence then start talking to some nice young ladies and trying to convince them that I can actually dance! Then usually after talking to some of the nice young women that venture into town each weekend my mates and I head home, at this point the sun is already up.

Before heading into bed I check my sugars which read 4.5mmol, do my insulin, have breakfast then head to bed. Wake up Sunday afternoon at 2.00pm and do some work for uni. About 5.00pm I have dinner and after have a shower then head to work (I also work in a cafe on Sunday nights and other nights during the week). Finish work at about midnight, head home check my sugars which read 6.5mmol, grab something to eat then head to bed.

If I’m out drinking I’ll usually eat something because I find that with dancing, walking to other clubs and the mix of alcohol it is a perfect recipe for my sugars going low. I tend to eat a pizza with a group of friends or drink a glass of lemonade so I don’t have to think about my sugars dropping low when I might be hooking up or in the middle of something and have to stop due to the fact of my sugar levels dropping.

This was a story of my typical weekend in my life when I have to deal with the mix of diabetes and alcohol.
