Hi Everyone,
I am just wondering if protein shakes are OK to drink with Type 2 Diabetes? And if anyone has any ideas as to which one? Thanks so much..
January 20, 2013 at 9:32 am #5861Hi Lavender.
Meal planning advice is such a diffiecult area to manage, both for the person who has diabetes, and for their health care team.
Are you asking “I want to use protein shakes as meal replacements” or “Is drinking a milkshake (that is protein plus carbohydrate) is a healthy thing to do?”
The best person to give you safe and effective diet advice is of course an accredited practising dietitian, who can help you design and healthy meal plan that fits for you as an individual. Do you have a dietitian Lavender?

I would like to use it as a meal replacement. I will ask my doctor on my next visit.. The dietitian was really no help to me and just told me to eat low GI food. Again thanks…-

January 23, 2013 at 6:44 am #5879Hi Lavender,
It may be of value to you to submit a request here for some diet advice. One of the team here is an experienced diabetes dietitian. http://www.diabetescounselling.com.au/counselling-request/
In my expereince in diabetes self management education, dr’s are generally not the best people to be giving expert opinion on a healthy eating plan designed for the individual. Their advice is often valuable, but not expert opinion.

January 23, 2013 at 11:56 am #5891Hi Lavender I am a Type 2 and I have used protein shakes as a one meal a day replacement weight loss strategy combined with a low GI restricted calorie diet/controlled portion diet. I was under the supervision of a dietitian familiar with Type 2 diabetes dietary needs, and weighed in with her fortnightly. I did lose weight quite quickly. However, maintaining that lower weight can only be achieved by carefully maintaining the low GI and calorie monitoring. Once you start eating 3 meals daily again it can be hard to stay focussed, as the shake replacement allows you a little ‘holiday’ for that meal each day. Good luck!
