Problem Areas in Diabetes (PAID) Scale
“Screening patients specifically for diabetes-related distress could benefit their HbA1c levels, suggests an Australian study.
Using a questionnaire that measured emotional responses to diabetes in 184 patients with either type 1 or type 2, the Sydney-based researchers found that HbA1c levels were higher in people with greater distress scores.
Patients in the midst of a major depressive episode were much more distressed about all aspects of their diabetes than patients who were not currently depressed. And depression had a long reach – patients who had been depressed in the past were more distressed about living with diabetes than those who had never been depressed, the authors found.”
This is a very helpful tool that I have been using for the past 12 years. As a diabetes educator it helps me easily identify and work with people who have been referred by their GP for an “update in their self management education”.
