Hi all, I am old to living with diabetes (…10+ years) but new to participating in the forums and trying to take a new approach to management and my life with diabetes. Need to START living again and taking better care of me, so thought this may be a place to get some help/advice. Don’t get me wrong, I have known for 10+ years what and how I am meant to manage and cope – it is just putting the knowledge into practice that I have struggled with
Need to get back on track – so here I am !!January 14, 2013 at 6:56 am #5770Hi Jane,
Welcome
Getting back on track? Gollies. Haven’t we all done that and many times too!
I’m old too but not ancient – at least I don’t think so
There’s two factors as far as I can see. One is knowing the value of food. I mean the amount of carbs they contain and the quantity necessary for living. That’s Dieticians territory. The second is motivation. The good people running this site will be able to help you with that, I reckon.
There used to be a group from here that took part in the Million Kilo Challenge recently where we charted our weight loss over a 6 week period.
It would be FANTASTIC if we could start our own here. Surely that would give motivation to those serious enough to take part.
Mmmmmmmm. Food for thought!

January 14, 2013 at 9:33 am #5771Thanks Red,
I am actually really motivated at the moment (besides slight lapses over Christmas/New Year period).
I have been doing the Michelle Bridges 12WBT – not always following the menu plans to the letter, obviously taking in extra calories to treat hypos etc, but have been sticking to the training schedule, and 8 weeks in have managed to drop 6 kilos so I am quite happy with myself. Even better was the fact I had my first HbA1C result under 8 for years. After 4wks on the 12WBT it was 7.3!! Plus I had managed to almost halve my insulin intake.
Being insulin dependent makes it tougher than it is for some others – but everyone has their own issues to cope with. I think I spent too long thinking I wouldn’t lose weight – the insulin made it too hard – boo hoo – and I didn’t try hard enough.
Anything that keeps us motivated is a good tool in my book – different people will react to different methods. I just seemed to have a last minute light bulb moment and only signed up to the programme on the day before it started! Had my doubts as to whether it would work but have really enjoyed it!!
Your 6wk challenge sounds interesting!
January 14, 2013 at 7:08 pm #5773Well done Jane. Life throws up some challenges from time to tie that distract us from our goals. It seem like you have made some positive inroads with your diabetes plan here. You must be feeling very pleased with yourself. Thank you for sharing.
Safe travels,
David
January 15, 2013 at 8:04 am #5776Welcome Jane
Lovely to have you here. It sounds like you are well on your way. Congrats on your progress! Most of us find putting things into practice hard, and for those of us with diabetes the extra challenges can make it seem impossible at times.Red that was good fun doing the challenge and David and I have also thought this would be good to do – we have started a Facebook Group for weight and diabetes matters and am wondering if we mirror it here at the forums?
