    Hi,

I was diagnosed type 2 just over 4yrs ago and put on Metformin and Gliclazide. All has been fine though it did take me a while to get my 3 monthly reading to an acceptable level. All was well if anything I’d get hypos that would just hit out of no-where very quickly. I’d start with the shakes and luckily I always had jellybeans on me I’d start on them and then juice or coke depending on where I was at and food. I got use to that in fact I was thinking I hadn’t had a hypo in some time.

Around 5 weeks ago I started 2 extra jobs so was working 3 jobs. I had noticed with my first that I was drinking more and put it down to the heat as everyone was complaining about the air-con. Normally I could last all shift without going to the loo but with the increased drinking I was now also going to the loo a lot more. I wasn’t seeing my doctor as she had moved and we were under the process of trying to move as well so I was waiting to find a new doctor.

Well anyway when I started the new jobs, one I found extremely exhausting and making my whole body ache, I even found myself dizzy at times and at night needing to use my glasses to watch some tv as it seemed more blurry. I would often fall asleep on the lounge after cooking dinner as my partner is a shift worker and if anyone rang up I’d take the phone mutter a few slurred words and drop it and crash again. My husband kept complaining I was being lazy and I put it down to the physical and mental stress one of the new jobs was causing me. Being bad I was also rarely checking my sugars.

Monday the 9th I went to work, rushed home early and had to go to a clients funeral and felt so tired I brought the kids takeaway and crashed at 6.30. When my 10yr old kept trying to wake me I could hear her but just couldn’t rouse myself. Finally my bladder woke me and after going to the loo I asked my son what time it was and he said 9.50pm as I took my night tablets. For some reason I decided to check my sugars my last meal was at 6.30 and it was now 10pm. My sugar was 21.8 I checked it twice because I’ve never had a reading over 15 that’s when I’ve gone overboard from a hypo and it quickly would go back down.

Working in a hospital I know over 20 especially isn’t good and insulin is normally used, I rang the local hospital who put me onto the new health line where I spoke to a RN then a GP it was around 10.40 then. We talked for 20 minutes and my husband got home so I tested it again and it had gone up to 22.4 I rang back and got 2 different people but was told once again it’s ok it’ll go down don’t go to hospital just see a GP in the morning. I had a shower and waited 30minutes and checked again and it had gone down to 20.1 so I went to bed.

The next day I saw a new GP she increased my Metformin to 1000mg x 3 a day and Gliclazide 80mg x 2 a day. I’ve been linked in with the diabetic team at the hospital now but have some questions.

I’ve been keeping a regular BSL chart and 13.6 has been the highest with it only dropping a point or so overnight. Most readings are still coming in at around the 9.something during the day except for one which was 5.1 and I had all the physical signs of a hypo starting.

I’m not as tired as I was but still need to nap, my body constantly feels like it’s had a baseball bat taken to it. I get headaches every afternoon roughly when I take the extra tablet and not long after I get dizzy spells but my sugars are 9. My face also aches really badly, my vision is very slowly starting to clear along with the feeling of I’ve been in a dream world. Some stomach problems as well.

I was told this had been building for months for me to get such symptoms and it could take a while for things to get back to normal. I’m watching what I eat closely, trying to get some exercise when my body allows it, how long before I will feel normal and my sugars return to a proper level?

I go to Bali in less then 3 weeks and having something like this over my head worries me being in a poor country with their medical facilities. I don’t know what to do if my sugars suddenly go up to over 20. again etc.

Anyone, I really need some help and advice I am seeing the GP again on Tuesday and had to resign from my permanent job as I feel the stress of it was adding to this happening. The new GP has a really bad bedside manner and while I’ve made a list of things to tell her and ask I know the best advice can often come from people living with such things.

Sorry for the long story but I wanted to give you all the full bit so you could answer me, Thanks.
