hi guys
I have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and have been on medication for 12 months or so. found the change of lifestyle ok but finding it hard to keep my sugar levels down sometimes I wonder what I am doing wrong. have opted for low sugar/no sugar /no fat /low fat diet and have lost 15 kgs so far . exercise is a worry for me as i have problems with my knee after a car accident in january. Also wondering if the medication has side effects such as loss of libido or is it old age
I am a 45 year old female and I am looking forward to summer to see if I can manage the swimming for exercise. can anyone suggest any exercise that might help?????????August 29, 2004 at 3:38 am #2497
AnonymousHi Angel
Welcome, you’ve dealt with diabetes so well, I’m really impressed! I wish I was so level headed with it.
I’m Freya, 33, have a mix of type 1 and 2 diabetes for 14 years. I have problems with a hip joint (inner left) and I’ve had to change my exercise routines to compensate for it. I used to do Kung Fu and yoga. Now I go to the gym. I got some personal training so I could get some exercises that would be suitable.
My hip is improving, so I am not too worried about it. I am slowly easy back into yoga. If you are still in lots of pain, I would mention it to your GP and/or go to a physiotherapist.
I am not sure about the meds and libido, I’m on insulin and I’m ok in that department!

That’s amazing how much weight you’ve lost! You must be so happy about it In terms of exercise safe for knee injuries, I strongly reccomend cycling at the gym. I had knee problems last year and in my case, I hopped on the bike and did a gentle ride for 10 -20 mins, pedalling forward for a certain amount of time, than pedalling backwards too. Also like e, I reckon you should look up your local gym if you have not already done so, and get one of the personal instructors to set you up with a program, with their job, they deal with injuries often and would likely know the sorts of exercises suitable for you. Gradually you will be able to work your way into a rhythm aswell. As I said, I strongly reccomend that you get a personal program drawn up for you, that way they can teach you the wrong/right way to do exercises, and you can also track your progress.
Goodluck and fill us in on how you get on k?August 30, 2004 at 5:49 am #2499Hi Angel,
In my experience, the best exercise I have found for bad knees, hips etc is swimming and water exercises. My husband has to have two knee replacements and he swears by the water exercises. Our local pool is heated, but unfortunately not covered, so it is only open in the summer. I also have a bad knee, not good for a line dance teacher – and we go to classes called ‘Mobility Impaired Persons’ exercise class, MIPS for short. A trained physio is there on the side showing us the exercise that we have to do. This goes for about 40 mins. Most pools have some sort of class like this. We have lots of people with disabilities like ours attending these classes which are conducted each Mon/Wed/Fri. And lots of people who have had knee and hip replacements as well as other operations are sent to our classes as the improvement in rehabilitation is dramatic. Hope you can find something that suits you.
Good luck,
Have a great day,
Barbara -
