    Hi to all out there,

just recently discvered this web site – fantastic
I am a type 1 db, diagnosed in November 2003.  Coping ? not overly, cannot stabalise, endo is a bit lost also – I don’t seem to fit into to many ‘norm’ catagories. they don’t really know why I became diabetic.

I had gestational diabetes – but that went away after birth (I also had no control over my levels back than) than in November (7mths after birth) diabetes came back – very severe and type 1.  Need help, suggestions, would love to chat with anyone who has experienced same.  do feel a bit like I’m living this by myself.

so many of you here seem to find it a bit of a battle also, I like hearing your dfferent ideas – especially about STRESS -my babys birth and the last year has definantly been one big STRESS – we’ve got a screamer !

anyway, any comments, suggestions would be great

    Cheers

    Hi Leonora and welcome
nobody knows why a person gets type 1 diabetes and type 1 in adults can be a little different in its presentation to that of children. It has only been recognised in recent times that age is not a determining factor in type of diabetes. Most people under 30 will be type 1 and over 30 type 2, but this is not always the case.

As for getting stabilised, it is pretty normal to go through a tough time for a while and it depends on how much insulin your pancreas is still producing and so on. Also, having had a baby not all that long ago means that your hormones are probably all over the place and hormones can cause havoc with diabetes! Lack of sleep will also do this!

When you say your endo is at a bit of a loss too, what do you mean, in terms of stabilising you or what?

Do you get any time out from the baby and some R & R time?

What’s your BGL like and what insulin regime are you on?

    bye

    Hi Helen,

thanks for taking the time to have a look at me.  My BGL was 10 back in Feb and has dropped to 9 in the last three months.  Endo wants me to get it to 7.

I’m 34 and endo initially didn’t think I was a true diabetic but something else that was giving symptoms of diabetes.  Anyway did the drink test of glucogen – I think this is what it is called and had some blood tests.  yes I am type 1 diabetic.
yes – endo is at a bit of a loss in stabalising me.  I am and always have been an avid exerciser and have watched what I eat and know the GI system.  So it seems real strange that some days my levels will go up to 22 and higher and the next day i can’t bring them up to a good level.

I’m on Nova rapid 3 times a day with doses of 8, 11, 16 and on protophane overnight, dosage of 8.  I also inject a little more if i want to eat avo tea.

time out from baby does happen occassionaly- think it’s just me sometimes and don’t cope too well with all the screaming (from baby), work, and trying to figure out my levels.  My R & R time is when I’m at the gym, though don’t know if you could really call that R & R ??  but it definantly does help my sanity and on occassion helps my levels also.

that’s it really, doing lots of reading about diabetes, and this web site at least shows me that other prople are struggling a bit also – you know – you’re not alone out there with this thing.

    thanks for listening Helen.

    Cheers

    Hi Lee,
    Welcome to the site.
I haven’t been here long either.
my hubby is type 1 (28 years) and last month our 18 year old son was diagnosed type 1. he is on the same insulin as you.
I commend you on coping so far, its a tough pill to swallow I know, especially if you just had a baby.
Im glad you’re going to the gym, at least you have something all to yourself to do.
Sometimes it will take a long time to get everything sorted out with your levels, especially if your pancreas has a little bit of life in it. Just take it day by day and try to learn as much as you can.
Hope all goes well for you. take care, Annette

    Morning Anette,

Thanks for taking the time out to reply – it’s great to get encouragement, sometimes you do wonder if you are out there by your lonesome……

Your son diabetic at 18 months – how did you discover it ?  do you test his levels often, do you find he has mood swings as his levels go up / down ?    You are one tough chick to have two in your family with type 1 – good going.

i have recently (2 weeks) stabalised my levels to be between 4 and 8 with the occassional 10.  Can’t believe it – WOW!!  i put it down to me doprring a little of my carbs for the day and putting vinegar on every salad imaginable – for some reason vinegar jut magically pulls my levels down.

Has you husband found anything in particular that will keep his levels in the ‘zone’ ?

I can’t believe how good I am feeling – amazing that you can adjust to feeling ‘not so good’ but when you come back to feeling good again – it’s just like a shot of adrenalin..

Still gyming when i can – luv PUMP – would like to be able to do it more often but so be it –

Hopefully my daughter does not become diabetic – a challenge I definantly don’t think I’m up for as yet .. she is a handful but a glorious, wonderful cherub .

thanks again for your kind words Annette,

    keep Well

    Hi Lee
yes vinegar is known to lower the overall glycemic index of a meal, as the acidity will slow down the absorption of the carbs. So it is a good thing to have with your meals. It sounds like things are settling down a bit more for you now, that is great. Keep enjoying the pump – I also was a gym junkie until a back injury and joint problems slowed me down. Now I have an eliptical cross training machine next to my bed instead!

    Bye

    Hi Helen,

are you happy with the trainer ?  do you miss the weights ? or can you still do some weight training.  Can’t believe i am becoming quite a little muscle body after all the PUMP and meat I have been eating (i was vegetarian for 15 years) but after pregnancy was recommended by dr to eat meat.  it certainly has made a difference to body shape and it also seems to help my levels.

it’s such an adrenalin rush once I’ve exercised – do you get the same feeling ?

Anyway .. my daughter has been unwell so I think stress has hit in and my levels have shot up again.  amazing how delicate the internal body is huh ?  i can see the variations now with what’s been going on in my life at the time.

keeping up the vinegar on everything – thankfully I luv the stuff and also trying the cinnamon – heard stories how that can help also.

must be off, keep well and thanks

    Lee
