Hi Im Brett im 48 and was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes around 8 years ago, Thing is ive just admitted and allowed myself to beleive its true in the last few months, Im hoping i can find some information here to help me start looking after this condition properly…Its taken a long time but ive just come to the realization that its destroying my life in many ways, and from reading the information on the home site and bits and pieces here i see it does not have to be all so bad, Its 4 months this week since ive had a cigarette first time stopping in 36 years so i guess im serious about all this, now to track my levels and get medication right then try and sort this depression that i feel , and fitness levels.. Anyway Hi to all again sorry for the rant, i dont have a very good support group or anyone with a listening ear so get a bit carried away… look forward to meeting people and getting a grip on this situation

January 2, 2013 at 9:23 pm #5694G’day Brett,
I think I have a lot in common with you. I was diagnosed 7 years ago with a BGL of 27.1 and with hindsight I
reckon that I’d been diabetic for the previous 6 years to that.
It’s only relatively of late that I’ve started getting numbed toes and my eyes are suffering with retinopathy
requiring injections. Getting a bit serious there! So I’ve decided (again) to get serious, and with support for the last 2 months, I’ve made some amazing inroads.
Are you on insulin and have you consultedan Opthamologist and Endochrinologist?
cheers

January 2, 2013 at 10:17 pm #5695Hiya Red, Yes i remember the days at 24 , to 28 s I actually missed them for a bit as when the levels got lower i got lethargic for quiet awhile, its funny though except for the numb or burning in my feet i seem to have a reasonable clean bill of health, I wear glasses but apparently its still just a heriditary thing, As for insulin ive just asked to go on it today, the first script is in the fridge waiting for the Diabetes Educator to turn up and give me the run down…. Im pretty mad at myself for letting it go on for so long but all the stresses that arose it was just easier to hide it, plus im a subbie with my own prime mover and work has been crap so was easier to sweep it under the carpet …… I have had half hearted tries but most of the meds with metformin give me really bad diorreaha and the rest give me headaches and indifestion, Anyway good to meet you you maybe we can follow up and see how each other is going

January 3, 2013 at 7:23 am #5696Hi Brett – welcome
As the guys have said, we are here for people to share as much as you like! And your story is not unusual. Many people, as Red said, go through similar things. With the Metformin, often the doses started are too high and hence the tummy troubles. You can talk to your doctor about “starting low and going slow” – which means start on a low dose and slowly increase. It can really help.
Let us know how you go with the insulin. It will make a big difference. If you would like any individual counselling we can also offer that – just contact us on [email protected]
Depression is very common also and many people with diabetes suffer what we call diabetes distress and burn out. Talking with people who get it can really help. All of our counselling team have diabetes ourselves so we can see both sides of the fence
bye for now

January 3, 2013 at 8:40 am #5699Thanks Helen,
Im actually hoping the insulin will not only level out the diabetes but also alleviate a lot of the associated stress, Then i will start looking at whats causing the low feelings if i have any after i get a bit healthier,,,, Thinking a bit of a sea change lol

Taking insulin is no big deal. It’s the fear of the unknown and the first jab that is the worst.
Needles, or more commonly called sharps, come in various lengths.
A new standard is a mere 4 mm.
You’ll be right
Let us know how you get on.
cheers
