I hear all the time the question “what do I eat?”

I am not a dietitian, I am a Diabetes Educator. I attempt to have people with diabetes consider more than a set of numbers in a record book and a number on a set of scales.

The question I would like to hear more often is “How much exercise is going to help me maintain the best health possible?” and “How do I fit exercise into my day” and “Is the exercise I am doing having positive effects?”

Do you ask your Dr the results of your cholesterol? Blood pressure? Can you see changes in these things when you start an exercise program?

How can YOU fit exercise into your day?

With such a strong culture of affluence we Australians live in, ‘keeping up with the Jones’ i.e. having a high quality of living, often means sacrificing life for work. Working longer and longer hours for the $$$.

    So, what are your priorities?

As I walk around Paris at present I see a snapshot of life. The beggars on the metro, the police cars sirens blaring, racing high profile politicians and diplomats around the city, and all levels of life in between.

What I also see is amazing food, eaten over time and in small serves.

And o so noticeable is the size of the population: it is uncommon to see an obese Frenchman. They sit for at least an hour and eat a meal. They eat quality, not quantity.

They also ride their bicycles to and from work, and the Velibe (almost free) bicycle system gives access to all to be active each day. The metro stations – to change lines is often a 300m – 800m walk between platforms!

So, how do YOU fit exercise into your day?

And has your Dr only focussed on informing you that exercise is for weight loss? and not to improve your cholesterol, blood pressure and of course BGL’s??

Please share your thoughts, methods and anything else related to exercise……
