Mary: age 34, married, in her first pregnancy, is transferred from a rural hospital to a city hospital at 30 weeks pregnant.
Mary has had diabetes for 20+ years; and has been using an insulin pump for 2 years.
Mary has had a significant life experience with living with diabetes, and has had a significant amount of training with her insulin pump.
The staff at the hospital have never met Mary before, and have no idea of how competently she is able to self manage her diabetes.
Mary’s family lives over 3 hours drive, and all work full time. She has no local support, no friends or family nearby
Mary is now in a very stressful situation. She has been told she will be in hospital for the next 7-10 weeks due to high blood pressure.
Mary has a phone that will give her unlimited access to friends and family; she has a laptop that she can use to entertain herself, and network with.
If this is you:
How do you feel?
What do you need to consider to manage your diabetes / overall health?
What questions are you going to ask of the:obstetrician
midwives
diabetes educatorWhich other members of the health care team might you consider asking to see to get you through this experience?
If you are using a pump, do you know how your pump is set up?
Do you self adjust your pump where needed, or does your health care provider (diabetes educator, diabetes specialist) do it for you?
Have you ever been in hospital while on a pump, and if so what were your experiences with the staff dealing with the pump – did they know what it was or not?
If you were to find yourself in a situation such as hospital where you need to manage changes to the pump but don’t know your pump settings, and have no access to your regular HP who set your pump for you, would that be ok or not? -
