Hello Anonymous. Many people with Type 2 diabetes feel a range of emotions, and shame or self blame can be one of them. Do you know why you feel this way? You can access free personal counselling on this website if you are Australian.

I hear that, I feel like if I tell anyone they will think that I brought it on myself, not looking after myself. It’s like in my head yes, if I had type 1 I could blame my body and a dodgey pancreas. But cause I have type 2 it means I was “bad” and “broke” my pancreas so its all my fault. I don’t want to tell people because I don’t want to feel judged. My older sister also has T2 and she says we just inherited it from mum. I know the blame game is futile and pointless but it’s hard to feel rational sometimes.

    Hi there Nathan :-)
Thanks so much for your bravery in joining this discussion. I too have Type 2 diabetes, and I am carrying too much weight for optimum health. I too sometimes feel judged by others, sometimes even by Type 1′s, as you say, they can’t be blamed. But do you know, they are often judged too, by people who know nothing about diabetes. So it’s not just us!

I also get what you are saying about this not being ‘rational’ or logical. It’s a feeling, and feelings can’t always be explained away. What I have decided to do is not let that ‘feeling’, OR the ‘judgement’ of others, get in the way of me managing my health the best way I can. I DESERVE to be able to get the help and the support and the medication that is available to me.

I do suggest that you get in touch via the website Counselling link for some personal counselling, it will help you in your journey towards recovering your health.
