I went back for my A1c result today and I am so happy I could bust.. I thought I would share with you all, my result was a 5!! Yes! Yes! Yes!
February 8, 2013 at 6:25 pm #6125That is wonderful news, Lavender! Congratulations on such a perfect result (after a lot of hard work I would imagine!).
February 11, 2013 at 1:10 am #6126Thanks Lily, Yes the hard work paid of.. so now to keep it there
February 11, 2013 at 1:34 pm #6138An HbA1c of 5? FIVE? That’s midrange for a non-diabetic!
That’s unbelievably low.
A question if I may. Are you losing weight because of your food intake?
At the moment, I am but my HbA1c is a way higher level than yours
Slowly coming down though.
February 11, 2013 at 7:43 pm #6148Great achievement Lavender.
May I ask about the frequency of hypos ie BGL’s less than 4? If this is not a problem, then you are doing o so well. If the hypos are frequent, it is important not to be having too many, or you may develop a loss in ability to identify early sympotms.
Safe travels,
David
February 11, 2013 at 9:02 pm #6150I have only had 4 hypo’s in the whole time. But that worries me as I get a little dizzy when I am low- So I am heading back to my doctor tomorrow as my own doctor had over booked and I seen another one and he told me not to go down in medication and why fix something that wasn’t broken. I’m just a little concerned about that so I will see what my own doctor says. I will let you all know how it goes…
Red my weight has Plateaued. I only have 4 KG’s to loose and I will be in normal range for the BMI.. I walk anything up to 5KM a night as well.. I always walk an hr after dinner as I know that the belly is full and my bgls wont go silly on me…
I’ll be sure to let you know what happens…
February 13, 2013 at 10:30 pm #6171I went back to my own doctor on Tuesday and he has decreased my medication for the next 3 months to see how I go- so good news for me- In 3 months if my A1c is still good I will come off my medication- so please keep your fingers crossed for me this is what happens..
February 14, 2013 at 6:38 am #6172Goal of off medication? How fantastic that would be. We will all applaud you when it happens. Wont be long by the sounds.
Once established, diabetes is progressive. I’ve already had two injections into the eye as a result of it. I’m trying to avoid a third.
My dream goal is going off medication as well BUT I know it will never happen. I’ll get as close as I can though.
I’ve gone from 20 units of Basil to 6 and halved 2 of the other 3 quick acting insulins.
I’ve dropped taking blood pressure tablets as of this morning. Earlier in the week it was 123/70. I get quite badly dizzy each time I straighten up from bending down. So I’ll just monitor to see how things go. I’m questioning as to whether I can drop Lipitor as my food selection has COMPLETELY changed. I’ll know the current levels of cholesterol in a couple of days so that’s very helpful.
Keep it up Lavender and you wont go through what I have up-to-date.
Best of luck – and congrats!
February 14, 2013 at 3:30 pm #6174Red.. I feel for those like yourself that have so much trouble- I guess I am one of the lucky once for now- Who knows what will happen in the future for me as you said diabetes progresses. But I am staying positive and hoping I can come of the medication- If I can’t that’s OK as I know I have tried my hardest and will continue to do so.
My cholesterol, is something I have tried to control but to no avail unfortunately- all the healthy eating and walking has not dropped it one bit- So I am on medication for that but all my other test results where normal so I can’t complain really.
I hope things really improve for you Red- You should be proud of yourself
February 15, 2013 at 2:06 pm #6175Hi Lavender,
Yes, diabetes is progressive. Type 2 diabetes: the body slowly makes less and less insulin. Therefore, over time, a person needs to have there medication increased. In my experience almost nobody is told, or do not hear because of the initial emotional distress, that this is the fact.
It is an admirable goal to be healthier by weight decrease through healthy eating and exercise. But in the end, medication needs to be considered as an essential part of your treatment if you are to achieve maximum quality of life over time. Medication is usually not only for BGL’s, but most often for blood pressure and cholesterol also.
Nothing in life is 100% guaranteed, but research shows us (DCCT, UKPDS) having BGL, blood pressure and cholesterol at healthy levels will significantly reduce your health risks.
Keep up the great self management plan. You must feel quite proud of yourself
David
February 15, 2013 at 3:24 pm #6176I had to explain to family and friends that Type 2 is progressive as they thought that maybe it would go away David- Education is so important not only for the person that has it but for those around us that love us.
I am not holding my breath when it comes to going of my diabetic medication, but under all my layers I think it’s wishful thinking on my part. As I said if it doesn’t happen I am more than OK with it as I want to be as healthy as I can be for myself and family, even if I feel like I am rattling with blood pressure, cholesterol and of course my diabetic medication.
February 19, 2013 at 5:03 pm #6197Have just got my latest HbA1c result – 6.3 and that’s with fairly tight control. That makes the level above of 5 all the more incredible! I can’t see myself getting down into even the high 5′s.
February 20, 2013 at 2:46 am #6200Hi redadare,
(its only just come to me… your name, he was the guy who put out the oil well fires, yes?)
For a human being the normal range of BGL is 3.5 – 7.8. So it is unrealistic to expect your BGL’s to be 5 all of the time.
I know, its hard work physically , intellectually and emotionally, and in the scheme of things I’m sure you’d like to see 5. something often. Keep in mind that your BGL meter is like a compass, guiding you and your team to achieve long term health.
Stay safe,
David
February 20, 2013 at 11:33 am #6210Oil well fires? Yep. He’s my hero. Has died a few years ago now. I’ve spelt my nic just a little different to his name though.
Reading your post above, I think you’ve mixed up HbA1c with BGL’s. They are two completely different animals – well the measurement of them certainly is.
I’ve had BGLs down to 1.6 but I’m talking about the measurement of cumulative glucose changes in the 3 month life cycle of red corpuscles – the HbA1c measurement is on a logarithmic scale and certainly can’t be measured by a BGL meter..
I reckon my average BGL readings over the last 3 months would be below 6 – now THERE”S a task to work out!
